patch 8.0.1844: superfluous quickfix code, missing examples

Problem:    Superfluous quickfix code, missing examples.
Solution:   Remove unneeded code.  Add a few examples.  Add a bit more
            testing. (Yegappan Lakshmanan, closes #2916)
